Napoleon Bonaparte from 1799 to 1850 Essay
ââ¬Å"His primary point was to himself in powerâ⬠How far do you concur with this perspective on Napoleon Bonaparte from 1799 to 1850? Napoleon Bonaparte was made by the upheaval of 1789. In his 15 years of administering, he figured out how to solidify a considerable lot of the points of the French Revolution., However, while doing as such, Napoleon additionally devastated numerous parts of the Revolution, breaking the trust and expectation the individuals of France had in Napoleon when he vowed to respect the upheaval. Napoleon controlled how he would have preferred to remain in power. Napoleon was a war saint to the French individuals. His extraordinary military strategies helped him to ascend to control. Napoleon accepted that the military is the genuine honorability of a nation. His abilities as a general were both strategic and strategical. By 1810, Napoleon had ruled the entirety of Europe; his triumph made him famous among his kin and brought acclaim. Notwithstanding, it this commendation and ubiquity that asked Napoleon to remain in power. He believed that when one when brings triumph, at that point the individuals would before long get exhausted and uninterested, in this manner Napoleon got heartless and endure no contention. This was to demonstrate lamentable in his destruction at Waterloo. Napoleonââ¬â¢s consistent desire to do battle and come back with triumph was his point of keeping himself in power. Napoleon local strategies picked up the well known help he requested so as to keep himself in power. He furnished France with a solid concentrated government, one that he would rule when he became ruler in 1801, therefore he conflicted with the standards of the French transformation as individuals of France wanted for a finish of the Monarch and one labor. Napoleon needed to keep himself in force and remain against any dangers. He additionally molded popular assessment by unrefined types of purposeful publicity, mystery operators, self-assertive captures and executions. Like a despot, Napoleon depended on general assessment to forestall unfriendly analysis. This also was against the goals of the French Revolution. Napoleon presently controlled the media, keeping up his situation as head. As he once stated, ââ¬Å"I can not obey anymore; I have tried order and I can't give it upâ⬠. Napoleon additionally utilized religion to keep up himself in his high position. Despite the fact that, Napoleon was not strict himself, as he thought it made individuals easygoing and gentle instead of free and solid, he knew the French pubic would not comprehend or concur with him. His point was to accommodate the congregation express; this would increase significantly more prominent endorsement from his kin. Napoleon was figuring, clever and sagacious. Napoleon conceded one of the rights referenced in the assertion of the privileges of man as he made Catholicism as the supported religion of France while Jews, Protestants and Catholics could unreservedly rehearse their religion. By doing this Napoleon had given the individuals what they needed expanding his fame. Napoleon said his point was the protect the upset, this is appeared in the code Napoleon which consolidated the extraordinary standards of 1789, for example, the uniformity under the watchful eye of the law, opportunity of religion, fetus removal of serfdom and professions open to abilities. Be that as it may, despite the fact that the code concurred with the greater part of the peopleââ¬â¢s interests, it removed a few rights particularly those of ladies and youngsters, as Napoleon once said ââ¬Å"Women are only machines for delivering children.â⬠Workers were denied aggregate bartering, worker's guilds were prohibited and ladies were avoided from training as per Napoleon they didn't require instruction just religion. As the he once wroteâ⬠Marriage is their entire destination.â⬠Napoleons financial arrangements were intended to reinforce France and increment his prevalence. To make sure about the economy and please the bourgeoisie, he helped industry through levies and credits. He constructed streets, extensions and channels. His principle accomplishment was the Bank of France which made sure about Frances economy. Seeing what had befallen the men in power before him Napoleon expected that he would not commit similar errors, he realized that he should become both a legislators and a despot. Nonetheless, he turned out to be excessively certain and accepted he was more impressive than any other time in recent memory, as he once composed ââ¬Å"Power is my courtesan. I have taken a stab at her victory to permit anybody to remove her from meâ⬠While in France he had a police state, he has spies all over, he attempted to control as much as possible to remain in power. He damaged the opportunity of the press in article 11, of the presentation of the privileges of man, reducingâ and blaming the papers. In spite of the fact that napoleon changed and improved France, it must be noticed that, in his legitimate changes particularly, all that he was doing was expanding upon the thoughts and exercises of different reformers before him. All what he did was union of the accomplishments and advancements of the insurgency, there is anyway nonattendance in social changes as Napoleon minded pretty much nothing and had very little enthusiasm for financial or social issues and didn't target improving ways of life as he said ââ¬Å" France has more need of me than I have of France.â⬠Consequently, despite the fact that Napoleon changed France and improved its conditions quite a bit of it was just done, so as to keep his ubiquity and keep up his situation in power. Napoleon from the beginning realized he was extraordinary, in this way he rose to accomplish the force he needed, similar to all tyrants he has desire. One that thought about force than others, one that didn't have a clue when the conceivable finished and the inconceivable started.

Blood Brothers Essay Example for College Students - Free Essay Example
Compare how Willy Russell portrays the two mothers in ââ¬Å"Blood Brothersâ⬠. Blood Brothers is a popular play by Willy Russell. It was written and first performed in 1981. The play tells of twin brothers, separated at birth, with one kept in a low-class family and the other is adopted into a wealthy family. The characters of Mrs Johnston and Mrs Lyons, the mothers, are total opposites. Mrs Johnston is a struggling, single mother of seven, with another two on the way, whereas Mrs Lyons is a privileged, yet childless, married woman. When we are first introduced to Mrs Johnston, she is a single mother ever since her husband left her for a younger woman. She is a lowââ¬âclass Liverpudlian, who is extremely hardworking. Mrs Johnston is described as a woman in her thirties, but looks sixty, because of the stress of work and her children. Mrs Johnston stutters at times, when shes under pressure, like when Mrs Lyons is persuading her to give away one of the t wins, ââ¬Å"Erm, well I think its theâ⬠¦ but, Mrs Lyons, whatâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Act 1 Scene 5. Mrs Johnston is shown as unsure and pressured into something she doesnt want to do. The reader may find it disturbing, since not many mothers give away their children to their employers. Mrs Johnston realises what Mrs Lyons is talking about, but is still confused over the whole situation. When she talks, ellipses are used to show that she pauses in her dialogue, because she is uncertain about the consequences to what she is about to do, ââ¬Å"At erâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Act 1 Scene 5. She is hesitating because she is in doubt and hasnt really decided. Mrs Johnston is lost for words and cant think of anything to say. Mrs Johnston is a superstitious lady, even though she denies it. The reader can see this in a scene between her and Mrs Lyons, ââ¬Å"Mrs Lyons: [Twigging, laughing] Oh, you mean its superstition. Youre superstitious are you? The Mother: No. But you never put new shoes on a table.â⬠Act 1 Scene 3. When Mrs Lyons laid shoes on the table, Mrs Johnston panicked. Mrs Lyons uses Mrs Johnstons belief of superstition against her when trying to keep her ââ¬Ëson, Edward, one of the twins. Mrs Lyons contrasts really strongly against Mrs Johnston. At first, Mrs Lyons is shown as a bright person in her thirties, unlike the stressed Mrs Johnston who is the same age. Mrs Lyons is an upper middle-class woman. She is also a very patronising woman, who is forceful and pressurising. Mrs Lyons uses negative views about extra children so that Mrs Johnston will have to give away one of the twins to her. She doesnt do this in an aggressive way, but in a dangerously sweet manner, ââ¬Å"Mrs Lyons: Already youre being threatened by the Welfare. With two more how will you avoid some of them being put into care? Surely, surely, Mrs Johnston, its better to give one child to me than to have some of them taken into care! If hes with me youll still be a ble to see him each day as you come into work.â⬠Act 1 Scene 5. She gives Mrs Johnston reasons to give up a child. Mrs Lyons is shown to be self-centred, ââ¬Å"My husband is due back tomorrow! I must have my baby now.â⬠Act 1 Scene 6. She doesnt care about Mrs Johnstons feelings, Mrs Lyons only wants the baby because if Mr Lyons returns and doesnt see it, he will know that his wife was lying. Mrs Lyons is willing to take a child away from its mother, so that she can save her own skin. Mrs Lyons is a very sly and devious woman, as she uses superstition against Mrs Johnston, so that she can keep one of the twins, after Mrs Johnston tries to take him back, ââ¬Å"Mrs Lyons: â⬠¦ You know what they say about twins secretly parted, dont you? The Mother: [Terrified] What, what? Mrs Lyons: They sayâ⬠¦ they say that if either twin learns he was one of a pair they shall both die immediately! It means, Mrs Johnston, that these brothers shall grow up unaware of the others existence. They shall be raised apart, and never, never ever told what was once the truth. You wont tell anyone, Mrs Johnston, because if you do you shall kill them!â⬠Act 1 Scene 8. Mrs Lyons is being dramatic, but she knows that Mrs Johnston is convinced, because she saw how Mrs Johnston overreacted when she put shoes on the table. Mrs Lyons is very manipulative, but she conceals it very well. This superstition ends up backfiring on Mrs Lyons because Mrs Johnston soon forgets about it, but it continues to haunt Mrs Lyons decades later. She becomes paranoid and obsessive, believing that Mrs Johnston is following her to tell Edward the truth. This shows the reader that the superstition affects her instead of Mrs Johnston, the person it was intended for. When she is trying to convince Mrs Johnston to give away a twin, all she mentions is the materialistic advantages of her lifestyle, ââ¬Å"The Mother: â⬠¦ Hed be able to play on those lawns wouldnt he? A nd have his own room andâ⬠¦ Mrs Lyons: If he grew up hereâ⬠¦ as our sonâ⬠¦ He could have everything.â⬠Act 1 Scene 5. Although she agrees with everything Mrs Johnston says, Mrs Lyons never mentions if she would love the child as if it was hers. The reader could think that Mrs Lyons could give him everything apart from love. The stage directions are in the text because Blood Brothers is a play. They are there because the dialogue doesnt describe how the characters are reacting or what the scenery is like. The stage direction gives the reader an idea of what is happening, without giving too much away, ââ¬Å"The Mother: [Terrified] What, what?â⬠Act 1 Scene 8. If the stage directions werent given, the reader wouldnt know how Mrs Johnston said it. She could have been curious or confused about the situation. The stage directions help with the readers imagination and interpretation of Blood Brothers. The Narrator is also a very good dramatic device . He acts as a shadow of the other character. The Narrator is there as a reminder of Mrs Johnston and Mrs Lyons agreement. The other characters dont acknowledge him which shows he is of a ghostly nature. The Narrator raises suspicion and builds up tension between the characters. He has no emotion and talks of the Devil, ââ¬Å"Theres no use clutching at your rosary The Devils in the backyard, he can see Through the gaps in the curtains he sees it all, Theres no use hiding in the hall. When he raps at the knocker then he knows youre in; No you wont, no youll never get away from him No you wont, no youll never get away from him.â⬠Act 2 Scene 1. The Narrator is trying to tell Mrs Johnston and Mrs Lyons that their pact wont work, because the truth will be known. He uses repetition and rhyme, so that his lines are more catchy and memorable. The Narrator is a creepy and disturbing character because he knows the future and talks about the Devil, which makes him God-like and all seeing. He is a neutral character because he doesnt choose sides and we dont know anything about him, other than he knows the fate of each character. The Narrator also represents superstition because he is there throughout the play, reminding the reader of the lie Mrs Lyons told. The dialogue of the two families is very diverse. Mrs Johnston uses ââ¬Ëcommon English and Mrs Lyons uses ââ¬Ëstandard English. Mrs Johnston uses ââ¬Ëcommon English in her dialect and many slang terms throughout the play, ââ¬Å"Oh its, its smashing thank you, Mrs Lyons.â⬠Act 1 Scene 3. This shows that she wasnt brought up in a rich family or she wasnt properly educated. Mrs Lyons uses ââ¬Ëstandard English in her language, since she is quite wealthy and possibly well educated. Instead of calling her son Eddie, she calls him Edward, ââ¬Å"Edward! Edward its time for bed.â⬠Act 2 Scene 3. Childhood is very prominent in the play. The reader can see a difference in the tw ins upbringing. Eddie seems to have grown up very fast because at the age of seven, he is already very polite and well spoken. His parents have influenced him because he is like a miniature adult. The reader can see that Mrs Lyons was very overprotective when she brought Eddie up, because he is already familiar with things like dictionaries at such a young age, ââ¬Å"Eddie: In the dictionary. Dont you know what a dictionary is?â⬠Act 2 Scene 2. Eddie speaks like he has used a dictionary a lot, whereas Mickey doesnt know what one is, but agrees to make himself look smarter. In contrast, Mickey is more wild and untamed. He plays childhood games, like mounted Police and Indians, and runs around with a toy gun. Mrs Johnston probably let him do whatever he wanted, because she had his other siblings to look after as well. This is something that Eddie never did, ââ¬Å"Were playing mounted Police, and Indians. Im a Mountie. Mam, Mam, you know this morning weve wiped out thre e thousand Indians.â⬠Act 2 Scene 1. A gun is mentioned throughout the play. At first, a harmless air gun is used a toy. This symbolises the fate of the twins. The child versions think its just a toy used to vandalise, but as they grow up, real guns are used. At the end of the play, when Mickey feels that Eddie has taken everything away from him, he produces an authentic looking gun. Even then it isnt real. The child and the adult Mickey thinks of guns as a relic of power. When Mrs Lyons moves to the countryside, she orders that poplars be planted, so that the council estate cant be seen. The poplars are a barrier between Mrs Lyons and Mrs Johnston. Mrs Lyons wants sever all ties with the Johnston family, but they manage to move to the countryside as well. Superstition plays a big part in Blood Brothers. With the Narrator as a constant reminder, the reader sees that Mrs Lyons superstition affects every character in the play. Mrs Lyons is most affected. Simple things th at a mother would tell a child would be nonsense to her, but knowing that Mrs Johnston is superstitious helped her get a child. At that point, superstition was an advantage to her. But when she faces the reality of what she has done, Mrs Lyons becomes deluded. The idea of motherhood and surrogacy is also present. Mrs Johnston and Mrs Lyons raise their sons very differently. Mrs Johnston lets Mickey be carefree and wild, but he isnt allowed to play near the ââ¬Ëbig houses in the park. Mrs Lyons raises Eddie the way she desires, but he finds his way back to his biological family. She becomes insane because of Eddies bonds with his real family. This reveals her real personality, compulsive and aggressive. Surrogacy is shown as a bad thing in Blood Brothers, because Mrs Johnston was reluctant to give away her child. Mrs Lyons manipulative personality is seen here, in her desperation to have a child, as she forces Mrs Johnston to give away her son. Blood brothers are also one of the themes mentioned. It started off as a childs alliance to his friend, but carries on until adulthood. The twins do forget about it at times in their life, but it keeps returning. The one who came up with the idea, Mickey, is the one who ends up dismissing it. He thinks nothing of it any more, ââ¬Å"Eddie: [Pause] I thoughtâ⬠¦ I thought we always stuck together. I thought we wereâ⬠¦ blood brothers. Mickey: That was kids stuff, Eddie, didnt anyone tell you? [Pause. Mickey looking at him. An ironic snort] But I suppose you still are a kid, arent you?â⬠Act 4 Scene 2. Social class and division is also mentioned. Whilst Mickey and Eddie overcome that boundary, their mothers havent. Mrs Johnston is treated very badly because of her low-class status. When Mickey is in trouble with the police, the Policewoman is very patronising and shows Mrs Johnston no respect, ââ¬Å"[to Mrs Johnston] And he was about to commit a serious crime, love, a serious crime. Now do you understand that? [The Mother nods] You dont want to end up in court again do you? Eh? [Shakes her head] Because thats whats going to happen if I have any more trouble from one of yoursâ⬠¦ â⬠Act 2 Scene 7. The Policewoman uses a threatening tone and rhetorical questions, such as ââ¬ËEh? She also uses repetition because she thinks that Mrs Johnston is poorly educated and inferior to her. Since Eddie was also there at the time, the Policewoman paid a visit to his house too, ââ¬Å"As I say, it was more if a prank really, Mrs Lyons. Id just dock his pocket money if I was you. But one thing I would say, and excuse me if Im interfering, but Id not let him mix with the likes of them in the future. Make sure he keeps with his own kind, Mrs Lyons, not running round with them at the other endâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Act 2 Scene 7. The Policewoman is more polite to Mrs Lyons. She refers to the incident as a crime to Mrs Johnston, but tells Mrs Lyons it was a prank. She doesnt u se repetition with Mrs Lyons. She is inside Mrs Lyons house because Mrs Lyons is a respected woman and if the neighbours saw, people would talk. The Policewoman is very two-faced, treating one mother better because of her status. The town, where the characters live, is separated. The reader can see a definite social division. There is the wealthy ââ¬Ëin the big houses near the park and the workers in the council estate.

As Jane states, Such a dear baby! And yet I cannot be with him, it makes me so nervous (Gilman 433). This tells us that she is away from the baby, and it makes her nervous. Since she is isolated from the baby, she never has the chance to get used to the baby and face her fears. Some sources say that it is important for a new mother to stay away from becoming too tired. It is important for the mother to get all the rest that she can get, and the baby needs to move to its own room as soon as possible. The loving support of a husband or significant other, relatives, or close friends is extremely important. During the day, close friends needs to do things with the new mother like shopping or visiting the mother. If the postpartum Olley 4 depression gets to where it is too much, then the mother may need to be put on antidepressant medicine, such as Zoloft, or the mother may need to go to a psychiatric hospital for treatment (Benson 1404). When the mother is feeling unwell, the family needs to take on as much of the housework that the mother wants to give up. Loneliness Of Long Distan Essays - Social Realism, Alan Sillitoe
Loneliness of Long Distan annon By Alan Sillitoe Born in Nottingham in 1928 to a working class family, serving in the Air Force, and going through many struggles, Alan Sillitoe is known as an effective representative of the English working class. Through his story The Loneliness of the Long-Distance R unner and the other stories contained within the book, Sillitoe effectively criticises the legal system of England, which deprives individualism from its people, is ineffective and interferes with people's lives. His stories Uncle Ernest, On Saturday Afternoon, and The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner show these themes. The issues presented still are pertinent today. Sillitoe effectively criticises the legal system in Uncle Ernest. Uncle Ernest is a working-class lonely man who lives an isolated, despondent existence. Joan and Alma, whom he befriends, are very poor and in need of a father figure. Ernest has lost all of his old friends. His family has left him. He is need of company. He can no longer cover up his loneliness like he covers up the sofas he re-upholsters for a living. Ernest buys food for them, clothes, and gifts. All three are happy in the rela tionship they have with one-another. However, one day, he was told, Now look here, we don't want any more trouble from you, but if ever we see you near those girls again, you'll find yourself up before a magistrate (57). Ernest is deprived his life, w hat makes him happy. He is deprived the only friendship he has because the unwritten social code suggests that a man such as himself befriending young girls as such means that he is a paedophile. The detectives interfere with his life. Sillitoe shows t he legal system not only makes false assumptions, but goes by an unwritten social code that is accusational. The issue of conformity is central; Ernest is not a normal member of society, therefore he is further ostracised. In On Saturday Afternoon, Sillitoe's narrative is of an account of a bloke hanging himself. The man survived. When found by a copper, he was told, Its against the law. It ain't your life. And it's a crime to take your own life. It's killing your self. Its suicide. (103). The legal system is ineffective; the man proved to the coppers whose life it was. He jumped out of a hospital window to his death. Furthermore, the legal system is questioned. In this almost spooky story, Sillitoe raises the issue of whether or not the law has a right to decide for someone else whether or not that person has a right to take their own life. He answers with a decisive no through his use of tone, and by making the copper look foolish. Sillitoe's story also im plies that the legal system interferes with one's life by preventing one from doing as they wish, especially when it is not harmful to others. Finally, and most dramatically, The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner questions the legal system's juvenile reform programs. They can spy on us all day to see if we're pulling our puddings and if we're doing our 'athletics', Colin Smith states, but they can't make an X-ray out of our guts to find out what we're telling ourselves (10). This is just one of Smith's comments which serve as a tool of satire, to say that the reform system is ineffective. It cannot change what the kids who go throu gh it feel inside. Borstal can make the students go through the motions but it cannot reform them. When Smith leaves, he says that the six months wasn't a bad life (46) and that his stay at Borstal made him stronger. It is implied that he commits a nother burglary. Sillitoe also criticises the system's lack of consideration for the juvenile, but rather personal glory. Smith does not want to be a runner. He does not feel any desire to win the race. Smith loses the race because he too is not a con formist. He will not succumb to the governor. He will not win the race because, It don't mean a bloody thing to me...only to him (12). Before going to Borstal, when a police officer questions Smith about robbing the bakery, the copper is shown to be incredibly foolish as Smith mocks him for days. Smith negotiates with the copper like a lawyer, asking him where his warrant is and mocking him in jest. Sillitoe shows the intelligence Smith. What makes Smith run? Is it the peace of the woods, the bea uty of the wildlife and animals

An Opportunity to Give the Unwanted Youth a Happy Home Essays
An Opportunity to Give the Unwanted Youth a Happy Home Essays An Opportunity to Give the Unwanted Youth a Happy Home Paper An Opportunity to Give the Unwanted Youth a Happy Home Paper Adoption is one of the greatest ways for loving responsible couples to give unwanted youth a happy home. As the number of children in the care of foster homes and orphanges grow, adoption is a vital way for children from broken homes as well as potential parents with a stable environment to become connected. As these families are formed, not only is it important to learn new heritage, but also it is equally important for adoptive children to be informed of their biological heritage as well. Adoptive parents have an obligation to diclose all pertinent information to their adoptive children, to include the identity of their birth parents. As children grow and develop, the desire and curiosity for them to know their biological parents will also grow. Questions concerning the origin of their eye color, hair color and their looks in general almost always arise. Curiosity of where children develop certain natural talents and interest never seem to be fully answered without a good knowledge of biological lineage. This information is very important to every human being, including adoptive youth. No one should be denied the right to know everything that can be learned about themselves. As these adoptive children grow into mature and respectable adults, certain issues concerning health will usually begin to surface. Genetics play a big role in determining our physical and mental well-being. many preventable illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and anxiey may all be avoided if certain risk factors are addressed early in the adoptive childs life. Without a detailed and adequate knowledge of family health history, many individuals are subject to making critical health decisions such as dieting and stress management which can eventually result in disease and illness. It is imperative for everyone, especially adoptive children, to know his/her family history. It can drastically affect ones health both mentally and physically. Knowledge of family history also gives a person a sense of self and belonging that no other component can bring to a family unit. It completes the vision of where one came from without limiting how far one can eventually go in life. Our society must not allow our youth to live in darkness and doubt about their biological background. We should never consciously withhold informatoin concerning the family history of any child, especially adoptive children. They have a right to know their biological parents and we, as prents, should have an obligation to tell and to expose them to a healthy, bright, and productive future!

Strengths and weakenesses of CHRIS21 HRIS system Essay
Strengths and weakenesses of CHRIS21 HRIS system - Essay Example The software that offers payrolls to the employees helps greatly in payment of employees (Schwalbe, 2009, 250). For example, availing payments to 2000 employees is a hectic exercise. This is because the employeesââ¬â¢ turnover is large and enough scrutiny would not be enough. The HR benefits a lot in terms of saving time concerning payments. Talent Management software helps scrutinize on the capacities of the workforce effectively (Lic Books, 2010, 24). This is because the software can handle many employees within an exceedingly short duration. Handling of 2000 employees of a company would ensure that all of them are recognizable. Therefore, the exercise is fair and efficient to the company In addition, there is also the use of social software for the employees. This software is beneficial because it helps the employees to reach to each other and share ideologies. Moreover, the software helps the employee to socialize and share. This forum helps the employees to reconnect and have a sense of belonging. Any issues facing human resource have their scrutiny in this arena. For example, 2000 employees require to be socially reconnecting. This software enables employees get in contact. Two thousand employees is a great number that cannot get in touch manually. This is because employees have commitments that would derail them from meeting all the time. One of the disadvantages of this human resource software is the fact that the employer has no special contact with the employees. Dealing with employees using software means that this happens without any person turning up. Therefore, the employees do not have a [personal relationship with the employer. This makes them refute the fact that they are an exceedingly necessary resource for the company. The other disadvantage is that employeesââ¬â¢ weaknesses are not recognizable. This is because software does

Examine Conan Doyles presentation of Dr Watson Essay Example for Free
Examine Conan Doyles presentation of Dr Watson Essay In the Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle creates a character called Dr Watson whom we learn about as we read through the stories. Dr Watson is in the Sherlock Holmess stories as Holmess companion. He is always there with Holmes and helps him when he is in trouble. He sometimes helps Holmes solve cases and is good at working things out. He is always there for Holmes and he makes the stories more interesting. Watson is a person who has a romantic, less practical imagination than Holmes. Watson has a poetic imagination and is good at describing things as Watson describes Holmes as very thin, very wrinkled, bent with age, an opium pipe dangling down between his knees, as though it had dropped in sheer lassitude from his fingers (Pg 28 MWTL). The description is made before Watson realizes that it is Holmes and not a stranger. The description shows how Watson goes into great detail to describe something and how far his imagination takes him. He is in many stories a soldier of the old school and has deep and genuine feelings for Holmes as quotes your cases have indeed been of the greatest interest to me(pg1 RHL) . This shows that Watson cares for Holmes and is interested in the same things as Holmes and they both have a deep understanding as they both know about the case and how interesting Watson thinks Holmess cases have been. Holmes always thinks he can rely on Watson in case he fails to understand something or is in a tight spot as Watson goes to investigate the Opium den by himself and happens to bump into Holmes who is in trouble and Watson says (MWTL pg28) I have a cab outside (Holmes) Then pray, send me home in it. This shows how useful Watson is to Holmes and How he sorts out Holmess problems. We also learn from the stories that Watson sometimes goes into missions himself. Watson is described by Holmes as reliable as Holmes says in The Last Bow. Good old Watson! You are the one fixed point in a changing age. Holmes knows that he can rely on Watson to sort out some problems. Watson also shows his feelings for Holmes and how well he knows Holmes (TLB pg122 )as he quotes There was something very strange in all this. It was not Holmess nature to take an aimless holiday. Watson clearly know that it Holmes wouldnt take an aimless holiday as he knows him very well and looks out for Holmes as well. Conan Doyle has created Watson to make the stories more interesting he has created a character with a good imagination. Also in most of the Sherlock Holmes stories we believe that Watson is telling the story so it is presumed that they are his points of view and so the stories would be different if Watson isnt there. To get the functions of Watson I have to study some facts. I am going to examine Watson and his history. I have to find out what sort of character Watson is and his background. Also I have to see how Watson and Holmes are a kind of double-act as they both rely on each other. Watson in many stories always sets the scene or atmosphere. It says in the introduction of Sherlock Holmes Stories that Conan Doyle loved all exotic things. We can get the idea of what sort of exotic things as we see Watsons ways of describing things. Watson is described as a sympathetic character although Holmes feels he is always exasperated by him in some stories (MWTL Pg29) Holmes quotes I suppose Watson, said he, that you imagine that I have added opium-smoking to cucaine injections and all other little weaknesses on which you have favoured me with your medical views This quote shows that Holmess doesnt want Watson interfering in his Private life of what he does and doesnt want to hear What improvements Watson as for him in improving his life. Although Watson isnt a very bright character he has a more romantic, less practical imagination than Holmes and is useful in stories as he provides the reader with impressive descriptions. For instance in MWTL Watson says (talking about his wife) Folk who were in grief came to my wife like birds to a lighthouse. Watson also has a poetic imagination when he describes certain events. We expect him to be a character like Holmes as they both are alike as they have the same taste in some things like Watson likes being involved in Holmess cases as Watson quotes your cases have indeed been of the greatest interest to me(pg1 RHL) but Watson is not as good as Holmes in solving cases as Homes is more Intellectual and has a good imagination. Watson is always there with Holmes and helps him out. He is a believable character as when he describes something its like he was actually there and it makes you believe him. Watson and Holmes are a kind of double-act as they both rely in each other as (MWTL) Watson is first to investigate the Opium den and is surprised to see Holmes there in disguise. And then when Holmes needs to get away, Watson has a cab which is useful to Holmes for his getaway as Watson quotes I have a cab outside (Holmes) Then pray, send me home in it. You must safely trust him, fir he appears to be top limp to get into any mischief if you will wait outside I will be with you in five minutes . This shows how Watson is there for Holmes and Watson is a good man ass he listens to Holmes as he says (pg29 MWTL) it was difficult to refuse any of Sherlock Holmess requests . Also when Watson doesnt understand something or is mixed-up up Holmes is always there to help him out. (MWTL pg29) (Watson) I came to find a friend. (Holmes) and I to find an enemy (Watson) an enemy? . Watson is clearly lost as he thinks he knows all about Holmes and then finds that Holmes came to look for an enemy and he doesnt know about it. Watson is a character who speaks for the reader as when Holmes is explaining something it is sometimes difficult to understand so Watson gets Holmes to repeat the explanation for the benefit of the reader. As in The Red Headed League Watson says to Holmes how, in the name of good fortune did you know all that? . This is how Watson gets Holmes to explain his reasoning. Also when he gets Holmes to explain Holmes always goes a little further and explains the case from the beginning so the reader doesnt have to think back Holmes explains(RHL pg 3) Your hands, my dear sir. Your right hand is quite a size larger than your left then Holmes goes on explaining and that shows how Holmes always goes a little further. Another thing that Watson does for us is that he sets the scene or the mood of the situation. As when he starts in the beginnings of stories he always describes what he did and how he did something. As in the story The man with the twisted lip Watson describes the way he went and he starts I walked down the narrow passage between the double row of sleepers, holding my breath to keep out the vile, stupefying fumes of the drug they could only come from the side, and yet he sat as absorbed as ever, very thin, very wrinkled, bent with age and a opium pipe dangling . These are some of the descriptions Watson makes. And by these descriptions we can learn that it was cramped and smelly in Victorian London and there were a lot of people sleeping rough. Watson uses a lot of descriptive words in stories to describe things and is very good at describing things. As the quote above is his description of Holmes, which at first he doesnt realise that it is Holmes as Holmes is in disguise. Also by looking at some of the stories we can tell that Watson admired Holmes a lot. As in TFP after Holmes supposedly has died Watson says whom I shall regard as the best and the wisest man whom I have ever known this shows us what Watson thought of Holmes. Also Holmes admires Watson a lot as he writes him the letter about him going to be killed. This shows that Holmes cared for Watson enough to leave a letter for him. Watson has a knightly attitude to life he gets on well with most people . unlike Holmes who sometimes takes things into his own hands as he thinks he knows best and therefore isnt like by many people like the police. He is always doing good things and therefore people go to him for help as (MWTL pg25) the lady quotes I didnt know what to do, so I came to you. This shows that he can also help people like Holmes. In the Sherlock Holmes stories there is a lot of historical language used and sometimes they are hard to understand as nowadays people dont use Victorian words. Some of the words are used in Watsons and Holmess descriptions . In RHL story words like ejaculated which is another word for exclaimed are used which are historical words, also jobs were called berths in Victorian times. And also there were things called a ledger which were like a record-book. The language was used because the story was set in Victorian times and it was set in Victorian London. In conclusion Conan Doyle has been successful in the creation of Watson as if Watson wasnt in the Holmes stories than the stories would have been different as different characters have different minds. The stories are always more interesting when there are good guys in them and Watson is a good guy also without Watson the Holmes stories would be immensely different. If Watson wasnt in the stories than they would have been less entertaining and unexciting as there wouldnt be the high-quality descriptions form Watson and the stories would have been dull. And if Watson wasnt in the stories than Conan Doyle could have made another character like Watson but named the character different. I think that Watson is an interesting character and if he wasnt there than the stories will not be the same as Holmes would not have an associate and wouldnt have help with him when he goes to unravel mysteries. The stories also would be less exciting.

When looking at the facts it is obvious that the the circumstances facing the East Asian nations were quite different than the ones that nations face today. But outside of these differences a loose model of the East Asian miracle can be utilized in Third World nations today and, considering the high success rate of so many of the East Asian economies, would most likely see positive results. The secret to success of East Asian economies is the hand that the government has had in industrial affairs. Starting in the 1950s nations like china began taking steps towards centralized government through reform. One example of this would be the Chinese land reform of the 50s under the new Mao Zedong's communist regime (Blecher, 2010:p.27). This land reform took away the oligarchic control of the landlords, changing the feudalistic policy of landlordism over to a more capitalistic form of socialism in which the government has the control. This is clearly a very vital part of the industrialization process as many nations that have failed with the agrarian reform continue to find themselves struggling to get out of poverty. A modern example of this would be Brazil, where the rural landlords have stalled any sort of reform that might dismantle their rule over peasants farmers and tenants (Kay, 2002:p.1076). The institution of land reform was a vital part of industrialization in East Asia, unlike other nations it was introduced before the economies had gotten on their feet and w... ... to ever truly practise total free trade, only even opened its borders in the 19th century (Chang, 2003:23). Despite this, Industrialized nations, with the United States at the forefront, continue to advocate for more 'freedom' in the economies of developing nations, claiming that there is no other way to be free from poverty. By doing this they make themselves out to be hypocrites calling for more market-freedom when in fact nations who practice state intervention, as they did during earlier stages, have seen more economic success. Two great examples would be China and India who both have a high level of state involvement in their respective markets, yet both nations have become the model for developing nations in the 21st century (Chang and Grabel, 2004:13). But for whatever reason the West continues to advocate a policy that they themselves have barely used.

Convergence of the Twain Analysis Essay
The Convergence of the Twain Rewrite Intimated in Hardyââ¬â¢s pindaric ode entitled ââ¬Å"The Convergence of the Twainâ⬠is an attitude of melancholy. While this poem is sad, it appears that Hardy also employs his work to revisit a common theme in his works and a strong belief in his life: marriage. The poem seems to carry the metaphor of marriage and the metonymy of the Titanic. Then later demonstrating the sundering of this idea. It is no secret that Hardy does not agree with marriage. In another piece of his work, Jude the Obscure, he states ââ¬Å"Marriage is marriageâ⬠, and getting out of it is both extremely difficult and also immoral. In stanza seven Hardy describes the ship as ââ¬Å"herâ⬠and that a ââ¬Å"sinister mateâ⬠was being prepared for her. Illustrating both sides of a marriage. Sinister seems the perfect way to describe Hardyââ¬â¢s attitude to the work and the idea as a whole. The stanzas appear to represent boats or ships at the start of the poem. As the reader continues to each stanza, he can see that each stanza becomes a little more deshevelled. Until the stanzas become completely disjointed. This represents the ship hitting the iceberg and cracking, and eventually splitting. Throughout the work Hardy alludes to fate. Listing key words such as, â⬠threadâ⬠, ââ¬Å"fashioningâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Immanent Willâ⬠, and most importantly, ââ¬Å"Till the Spinner.â⬠ââ¬Å"The Spinnerâ⬠is referring to the third fate: Clotho. This fate spins the thread of life. ââ¬Å"Till the Spinner of the Years Said ââ¬Å"Now!â⬠And each one hers, And consummation comes, and jars two hemispheresâ⬠This quote coming from the last stanza of the poem demonstrates Hardyââ¬â¢s lack of optimism for marriage. It also establishes when the Titanic struck the iceberg that it devestated two hemispheres and will stand as a depressing
